“IMPACT!” An International Juried Show
On line -- Mar 1, 2009 --

CALADAN GALLERY presents an on-lined juried exhibition of 25 national and international artists entitled “IMPACT!”  We are exposed daily to symbolism and icon; mass marketing and television; offers and demands.  Some of these are visual in essence, utilizing dramatic color, composition, subliminal placement and text. The television can hold attention for hours on end.  Perhaps it is a remnant of the ancients’ storytelling, however lost the meaning becomes in the flux of brain-numbing, soul-sucking content.  It is a chance to “turn off”, to “dumb down”, to leave cognitive activity at the door, as it were.  (Although, these days there are truly magnificent broadcasts if you care to find them)  How can a piece of artwork compete with the offer of losing one’s responsibility of observation?  In spite of mass media marketing we are left wandering in a sea of confusion, unable to blot out the alone-ness and the isolation we have succeeded in building around us as individuals.  When we examine and define the purpose of making art, we realize that it fulfills an entirely different frontier.  Perhaps in many cases, art provides the balance to the present day’s meaning deficiency.

The 3 paintings Paula entered were: "Return to Innocence", "It is Our Light", and "Deliverance"

Here is what they wrote:

"At first glance, these paintings by Paula Visnoski seem as a tribute to the many symbolic images present in Native American tradition. This would, in itself, be a point of great interest and relevance in the interpretation of IMPACT!. However arresting is, of course, the image of Barack Obama, in the guise of Uncle Sam. He seems to point to us, informing us of our own individual power, the impact that we as individuals can make upon those around us. He reminds us that it is our own attention and awareness that combined, will be the promised momentum into a more extensive and realistic economy. The artist very successfully portrays this profound message that is behind each one of Barack Obama's intentions. In addition to this is found the daily symbols of living in the world in these paintings, contrasted with life and death, issues of identity, and depth of realization. Balancing these aspects is a cornerstone in this work, as well as in the evolution of the artist's consciousness."
